About BoatOut
Our Mission
BoatOut was founded with a simple yet powerful mission: to help boat owners, buyers, and watersports enthusiasts everywhere make smarter decisions, through approachable guidance and free tools that make financing a boat, pricing a day of fuel, budgeting a year of maintenance, weighing a rig before towing, and sizing an anchor clearer, more rewarding, and more practical.
We believe that everyone who boats or dreams of owning a boat, from first-time buyers to lifelong skippers, deserves access to accurate tools, comprehensive resources, and trustworthy guidance. Our platform bridges the gap between confusing numbers and confident, well-informed decisions about boats and watercraft, boating costs and ownership, marine navigation and electronics, boat safety, rentals and tours, and boating smart.
Through our free collection of tools, we help boaters make informed decisions about boat loans and monthly payments, fuel burn and the cost of a day on the water, annual maintenance budgets, gross towing weights, anchor and rode sizing, and the boat length and type that fit how they actually get out on the water. Every tool is designed with real-world applicability in mind, tested against the day-to-day realities of buying, owning, and running a boat, and continuously improved based on user feedback. To go deeper, explore our Museum of Boats & Seafaring, with galleries on boats and watercraft, seamanship and equipment, famous vessels and the Age of Sail, and the great navigators who charted the world.
Our Story
BoatOut emerged from a need we experienced firsthand. While trying to sort through conflicting advice and scattered references, we noticed a common challenge: the lack of accessible, accurate tools for the everyday decisions that come with buying a boat, running the numbers on what ownership actually costs, and making the most of every season on the water.
Good boating relies heavily on seamanship and a little know-how, which are invaluable. However, a confident owner also benefits from clear answers about how a boat loan breaks down, what a day of fuel costs at the dock, what a year of maintenance and storage adds up to, whether the tow vehicle can handle the loaded trailer, and what anchor the boat really needs. We saw an opportunity to combine well-researched boating knowledge with modern tools to help people make confident decisions about every boat and every outing.
Our team began developing tools that we wished existed when we bought our first boats. Each calculator and guide was created to solve real problems encountered when financing a hull, budgeting a season, or hitching up for the ramp. We tested every tool against real-world numbers, refined the logic based on feedback, and ensured that the results reflected current, widely accepted boating practice.
Today, BoatOut serves active users worldwide, from first-time buyers to lifelong boating enthusiasts. Our tools have helped people budget boat loans, price fuel for a day out, plan maintenance costs, check towing weights, size anchors and rode, and find the right boat, and make more deliberate, confident boating decisions.
